How important to you is public engagement? If you support it, what is your plan for improved engagement of residents in decision-making processes?
Public engagement is integral to a thriving community. . If elected Mayor I would have a monthly day where the ‘Mayors door is open’ to hear from our residents. I would also have a weekly meeting with each council member to check in for support and see what they are hearing. A weekly check in is a foundational piece for any successful organization or business.
Please DM or email me if you would like to discuss this further. Thank you
How do you feel about our waterfront?
Here’s a few things that I’ve learned about the waterfront.
-The town owns half of the land because they gifted the other half to the family that owns the aggregate company. This happened shortly after the federal government gave it to the municipality because they didn’t want to maintain it. Guess we didn’t either.
-in 1988 an engineering report/study was done to find that we can sustain a marina there. Unfortunately the town passed on the grant that was available. Leamington didn’t pass and that’s why their marina is setup the way it is today
-1998 town entered a 50 year lease with aggregate company giving them full control. Since then the town has tried numerous times taking them to court to get out of lease. Now current relationship between the 2 parties is strained to say the least.
-port is probably worth about $100 million today
What to do?
-develop what we currently have.
-bring cement wall at bottom of Mettawas park to 10 feet to block out stone
-mural the wall and plant tons of trees in and around the wall. Increase walking paths etc.
-continue to increase use of that area for arts and culture. We (Kingsville Music Society-which I am the president) have been putting on free concerts there for last two years. Continue to grow that.
-the town applied for and received a grant for some upgrades to Grovedale so there can be better events there-concerts, plays, etc. We have a real opportunity to be a leader in our area in arts & culture.
-all this while still trying to have a conversation to get us closer to gaining full control of the rest of the waterfront.
